This CoE will showcase the synergistic interaction of scientific concepts and technology-driven ideas in a multidisciplinary group of researchers from multiple institutes (IISc, Bangalore; IIT Kanpur; CSIR-CGCRI, Kolkata; IIEST, Shibpur; NIT Rourkela; CIPET, Chennai; SCTIMST, Trivandrum) and from multiple disciplines/ Profession, including Bioceramics, Biopolymers, Biomechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Dentistry, Orthopedic surgery, histopathology, biomedical entrepreneur. In particular, one of the projects under this CoE is related to the acetabular socket materials based on hybrid polymer-ceramic composites, which is already proven to be biocompatible, for Total Hip Joint Replacement (THR) and the deliverables of this specific project hold promise for immediate commercialization for use as acetabular sockets in THR. In another project, the Zirconia-toughened Alumina (ZTA) based femoral ball head prototype will be developed using integrated manufacturing steps to obtain smoothly polished femoral ball heads with better strength, fracture toughness and wear resistance. As part of the development of dental implants, Ti6Al4V-based dual ceramic coated abutment and screw implants will be developed and the biocompatibility will be established.
